We Can Safely Remove Algae, Mold and Mildew Stains 

Many people in the last few years are noticing that their shingle roofs have become discolored & have developed unsightly dark streaks and stains over large areas.

This is not necessarily a sign that you need a new roof.

What they are seeing is an algae (Gloeocapsa Magma) that is actually growing on the roof. It is most commonly found on the north side of the house or in areas that are often shaded and therefore slow to dry. This condition can be cured or resolved by applying an environmentally safe chemical cleaner to kill the algae combined with a low pressure wash to flush it away. After cleaning a zinc or copper strip should be installed at the peaks and hips. These strips will release metallic particles that are toxic to the algae and will help to prevent it from reforming.

In years past this was not a problem, but in the last 20 years shingle manufacturers have been adding ground up limestone to the mix as a filler. The algae is feeding on the limestone (hence the dark stains). Metals such as lead, zinc, copper and steel work as a natural algaecide. If you look at a streaked roof you will notice that the shingles below any metal protrusions such as chimneys and plumbing pipes are clear of staining and look much brighter and newer. This is how your shingles should look. Most shingles are warranted for 25 or 30 years (this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are going to last that long). If your roof is less than 15 years old it is very likely that your roof will benefit greatly from this treatment. It will help you prolong the life of your roof and give you possibly 10 or more years of service.
